Digital Heat Transfer Printing

Full-colour logos, photos or individual names and numbers on a small batch? Here's how digital heat transfer works.

What Is Digital Heat Transfer Printing?

Want photo-quality images or detailed multi-colour artwork on a shirt, without paying for an 8 to 10 colour silk screen printing set-up?

Digital heat transfer printing keeps your T-Shirt Printing Singapore price down for colourful designs, because it prints full colour in one pass.

It's best for full-colour artwork on smaller quantities (e.g. 20 pieces), where setting up screens wouldn't make sense.

Gradients, shadows and subtle colour changes are reproduced faithfully, so the print looks just like your file.

It's also usually cheaper than DTG printing for the same job.

1. How Digital Heat Transfer Works

Your design is printed digitally onto transfer media with an inkjet or eco-solvent printer, then cut to shape around the artwork.

The heat press does the rest, applying controlled heat and pressure so the design bonds to the fabric.

A good result depends on even pressure, the right temperature and accurate timing.

Modern presses control all three precisely, which means consistent results from the first piece to the last.

That consistency is why heat transfer remains a staple for short runs and personalisation.

2. What Is a Heat Press?

A heat press is a machine with a heated top plate that clamps down on the garment.

Presses can be manual, automatic or semi-automatic, and come in different shapes for flat items, caps and mugs.

A good press spreads heat and pressure evenly across the plate, so the transfer adheres everywhere at once.

The same machine is used for other methods such as vinyl transfer printing and sublimation printing, but this page focuses on digital heat transfer.

The heated platen, usually aluminium, holds a steady temperature while the lower pad keeps the garment flat under pressure.

3. Heat Transfer: Strengths and Limits

Here are the key trade-offs to consider when comparing T-shirt printing services.

Heat transfer is also handy for branding gifts with colourful artwork where silkscreen won't work. For ideas like corporate gifts singapore for employees, you can choose from over 1,000 items to customise.

4. When We Recommend Heat Transfer

Digital heat transfer is our pick for customers with full-colour designs on small orders (e.g. 20 pieces).

For bigger quantities with simple colours, silkscreen is usually the better value.

It's also our recommended method for reversible windbreakers.

Embroidery would leave visible stitching and backing on the reverse side, so for these we use vinyl transfer or digital heat transfer, both applied with a heat press.
